Safeguarding

Purpose

To ensure that the young people who use The Third Family can do so in a safe, secure, and healthy way.

Framework

Convention on the Rights of the Child

Definitions

Young People (Shōnen Shōjo)

Children and young people who use The Third Family. There is no age restriction. Although the term "shōnen shōjo" (boys and girls) is used, it does not imply any specific gender. We choose this term because children and young people may rarely refer to themselves as "children" or "young people," whereas "shōnen shōjo" is commonly found in novels, music, and manga aimed at younger audiences — making it feel more familiar and relatable.

Adults

Adults involved with The Third Family, including staff, volunteers, and event participants.

Responsibilities of Involved Adults

  • Understand the rights of young people and empower them toward healthy development.
  • Continually reflect on their own conduct in light of children's rights.
  • Treat all young people fairly and equally.
  • Maintain an organizational environment that prevents and responds to inappropriate conduct, and take individual responsibility for their actions.
  • Refrain from using inappropriate, discriminatory, derogatory, aggressive, or sexually suggestive language.
  • Do not psychologically harm young people through actions such as undermining their self-esteem or looking down on them. Do not impose your own values or experiences.
  • Do not collect young people's personal information. Do not connect with them via personal SNS accounts outside of The Third Family.
  • Do not share your own personal information. Use a nickname when participating.
  • Report urgent or difficult-to-handle situations to the chairperson or executive director. Share with the wider team as appropriate thereafter.

Principles for Our Systems

  • Keep features simple and easy to use. Write text concisely.
  • Consider text contrast and color accessibility for diverse vision needs in the UI.
  • Do not exploit users (no advertising, no amplification of approval-seeking behavior or algorithmic dependency).
  • Maintain an anonymous environment.

Values of The Third Family

  • Build The Third Family together with young people.
  • Recognize that some children and young people may not have access to The Third Family.
